Abstract

727,716. Casting composite articles and joints. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 6, 1953 [Oct. 8, 1952], No. 27426/53. Classes 83 (1), 83 (2) and 83 (4). Welding by fusion.-In a method of making a turbo-machine bucket-wheel by uniting preformed buckets with a central wheel web, the buckets are assembled about the periphery of a mould with their base portions connected together to provide a path for electric current, electrically-heated to a predetermined temperature and then molten web-forming material is poured into the mould. The individual buckets, Fig. 1, may be made by extrusion, forging, machining from solid stock &c., but are preferably precision cast, as by the lost-wax process, and comprise a blade portion 1, a radially projecting locating tang 3 and a base portion 2 comprising a fusion tang 6 and an intermediate base portion 5 having transversely extending arcuate recesses 5a, 5b. A number of buckets are then supported in a welding fixture, Figs. 2 and 6, clamped by rings 7, 9 and connected by tack welds 11, 12 to form a complete annular row, the tangs 6 forming a closed electricallyconductive path. Ceramic rods or tubes 21 are inserted in the substantially circular recesses formed by co-operating recesses 5a, 5b and the assembly inserted in a shell mould 14, 15, being supported therein by engagement of the tangs 3 with recesses adjacent clamping bolts 16 and yieldable packing rings 17, 18 of asbestos or fibre glass. The bucket assembly is heated by low voltage induction coils 24, 28 which induce eddy currents in the path formed by the tackwelded fusion tangs. Metal is then poured through the gate 30. After cooling, the shell mould and packing rings are stripped from the casting which is then machined or ground to size, the tangs 3 being thereby removed. Before or after machining, the ceramic tubes &c. are removed by driving them out or by chemical means, and any metal which may have entered the gaps 21a between the tubes and the bucket bases, is cleared out by reaming or grinding.
