Abstract
727,112. Making strip metal. CAINE STEEL CO. June 3, 1953, No. 16323/53. Classes 83(2) and 83(4). Rolling.-In a method of making strip metal a number of strips cut simultaneously from a roll of sheet metal are rolled simultaneously along the edges by pairs of rolls arranged at different heights in overlapping staggered relation so that the strips may be lifted to the corresponding roll pairs without being twisted out of their general path. In one example, sheet metal 14, Fig. 1, from a reel 12 is severed into six strips by a series of circular cutters 26 and the strips are rolled at their edges by six pairs of rolls 46, 48 on vertical axes. The rolls 46, 48, Fig. 3, are freely rotatable in mountings, some of which, 50, 64, are slidable in guides 52 on a table 32 to suit the width of strips and others, 58, of which are slidable on shafts 56 supported above the table 32. The rolled strips are reeled onto a driven reel 72 which may incorporate an overload slip clutch 78 in the drive. Guide rolls 30, 66 which may be driven as by a sprocket 82 and slip clutch 84 are placed on each side of the roll assembly and a brake 22 may be applied to the reel 12. Reels 86 remove trimmings from the edge of the sheet. In order to prevent hardening of the strip at the rolled edges the strip may be heated at the edges before rolling as by burners 91, Fig. 9, or by various arrangements of induction or radiant heating. In a modification, nine strips 121-123, Fig. 6, of differing width cut simultaneously from the same sheet are rolled between pairs of rolls 134 on horizontal axes and having annular projections 139 at their ends to engage and round the edges 146 of the strip. The rolls 134 are mounted between arms 136, Fig. 7, which are slidable on guides 131 and locked in position by screws 145. Bolts 142 engaging lugs 143, 144 on the arms 136 adjust the pressure of the rolls on the strip. Each roll comprises a pair of end discs 138 carrying the projection 139 and having between them a number of discs 141 varied according to the width of strip to be rolled.
