Abstract
727,001. Rotary pump. BAX, E. J., [trading as BAX ENGINEERING CO., E. & J.]. Feb. 17, 1954 [July 16, 1953], No. 19728/53. Class 110 (2). A manually operated rotary pump (having means for adjusting the volume pumped) consists of one or more rollers 30 squeezing a flexible tube 50 to pump the fluid contained in the tube 50 and particularly for pumping blood during a blood transfusion. A spindle 14, preferably of phosphor bronze, has an eccentric boss 13 which fits into a hole in the centre of the base of a cylindrical (or part cylindrical) casing 11 made preferably of an aluminium alloy. A lever 16 fits over a square section 15 of the boss 13 and is secured there by a nut 17. A screw 20 fixes the position of the lever 16 relative to the casing 11. A sleeve 33 is rotatably mounted on the spindle 14 and to the sleeve is secured a circular plate 32 whch has attached spindles 31 carrying rollers 30, preferably mounted on ball races. A cover-plate 34, with a handle 37, is secured by a screw 35 to the top of the plate 32. A clamping bracket 21 for securing the pump is welded or otherwise fixed to the casing 11. 'The casing has two slots 40 and 41 with holes 42 and 43 (see Fig. 3, not shown), through which passes a flexible tube 50. When the handle 37 is turned the rollers 30 squeeze the tube in succession so creating a pumping action. The volume pumped per cycle can be altered by adjusting the position of the lever 16 which alters the eccentricity of the spindle 14 relative to the casing 11.
