Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0726864/IV (b)/1> (wherein R is a phenyl group which may have one or two substituents chosen from the following groups:-alkyl or alkoxy groups having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, a nitro or amino group; and R1 and R2 which may be the same or different are methyl or ethyl groups) and their non-toxic water- and alcohol-soluble salts, preferably the hydrochlorides, sulphates, acetates or tartrates. The compounds are prepared by reacting a crotonic acid anilide of formula R-NH-CO-CH=CH-CH3 with a dialkylamine of formula <FORM:0726864/IV (b)/2> preferably in the presence of a solvent (e.g. alcohol) and preferably in a closed vessel maintained at 100-150 DEG C. for several hours. Compounds containing nitro groups may be subsequently reduced, e.g. with stannous chloride in alcoholic hydrochloric acid or by hydrogenation using a platinum oxide catalyst and a methanol or glacial acetic acid solvent. Specified dialkylamines are dimethyl-, diethyl-and methyl ethyl amine. The examples describe the preparation of the anilide, orthoanisidide, para-anisidide, ortho-phenetidide, para - phenetidide, para - amino - anilide, para-nitro - anilide, 2,6 - dimethylanilide and para-n - butoxy - anilide of b - diethylamino - butyric acid, and the anilide and para-phenetidide of b - dimethylaminobutyric acid.
