Abstract
726,743. Grinding. SENECA FALLS MACHINE CO. June 16, 1953, No. 16612/53. Class 60. [Also in Group XXII] Work-handling mechanism for a lathe or grinding machine comprises an arm, a fixed support on which one end of said arm is pivoted, separate loading and unloading units secured to said arm and means to swing the arm and units angularly in a horizontal plane from a loading and unloading position in the vicinity of the cutting head to a discharge and replenishing position remote therefrom. Loading and unloading units comprising grippers 40, Fig. 1, carried by levers 41 pivoted at 42 to a slide 43 are mounted at each side of an arm 20. The latter is carried by an upright post 22 which also supports a reversible electric motor M and gearing 30, 32, by which the arm may be swung into position over the machine tool or to the retracted position (broken lines, Fig. 2) where a new workpiece W3 is grasped from a supply stand 51 and the finished workpiece is deposited on a discharge structure 50. The workpiece is loaded into the machine between the centres 10, 11, by a plunging motion, the headstock end being first located. The loading and unloading units are of the type described in Specification 724,815, [Group XXII], which is referred to.
