Abstract

726,620. Sewing-machines. GREIST MANUFACTURING CO. June 26, 1953 [June 27, 1952], No. 17775/53. Class 112. In a button-sewing attachment for a sewing machine, a button carrier 25 is pivotally mounted on a frame for oscillating movement in a horizontal plane and is oscillated by means which comprise an arm 15 pivoted on the frame and forked at 16 for attachment to the needle bar of the machine, a pawl 18 carried by the arm, and a ratchet wheel 17 which is rotatably mounted on the frame for engagement by the pawl, a tooth being omitted from the wheel to provide a smooth portion 21, whereby rotation of the wheel is stopped when the pawl engages said portion. The frame consists of a base 10 and a pair of spaced vertical flanges 11 which carry a rotatable shaft 12. The arm 15 is pivoted on the latter and the ratchet wheel is fixed thereto. A cam wheel 13, also secured to the shaft, has a wavy cam slot 14 engaged by a pin 29 mounted on the carrier to impart oscillatory movement to the latter when the shaft rotates. The carrier is pivoted on a pin 31 which is longitudinally adjustable to enable the throw of the carrier to be varied. Pin 31 passes through elongated slots in the carrier and the base, and is secured to a member 35 slidably mounted on the base, a headed pin 37 secured to the latter passing through an elongated slot 36 in the member 35. The latter has a finger plate 38 and a vertical side flange 39. A screw 41 secured to one of the flanges 11 passes through an elongated slot in flange 39 arid carries a nut 42 adapted to bear against flange 39 for locking member 35 in adjusted position. A knob 22 is provided on shaft 12 to rotate the ratchet wheel teeth into engagement with the pawl. A thread supporting finger 50 has a tapered end overlying a button 55 which rests in a seat 27 in the carrier. The rear end of the finger forms a loop 49 adjustable vertically in a guideway 48 provided in a support 45 which is adjustable longitudinally on an arm 43 extending laterally from the carrier.
