Abstract

Solid in suspension, such as cellulosic pulp, <PICT:0726579/IV (c)/1> enters a reaction vessel through an inlet 8 and is forced towards the outlet 11 by the incoming suspension, a chemical being fed in a countercurrent direction from pipe 9, and a wash liquid from pipe 10, the spent liquor being drained off through pipe 4. The fibres are passed in through scraper arm 6 arranged over a false bottom 2 mounted on rotating shaft 5 in the manner described in Specification 717,654, [Group I], and ascend past agitator arms 7. The bleaching reagent from pipe 9 increases in concentration as the pipe is approached and then diminishes, Fig. 2 (not shown). Between the pipe 10 and the outlet 11 washing takes place so that the fibre is freed from the chemical reagent. A second reaction may take place above the first.
