The teeth of a worm 1 are lubricated by oil in which a'worm wheel 2 dips, the worm wheel being provided on one or each side with a collar 3, the edge of which extends at an obtuse angle away from the side of the wheel 2. The collar may have its edge corrugated or provided with grooves or projections whereby to retain oil at the top of the wheel when the worm gear is at rest.
