Abstract

The passage of water vapour through rubber hydrochloride film is hindered by adding a non-volatile dialkyl ether, preferably one which is solid at air temperature. The ethers preferably have at least 12 carbon atoms in each alkyl group, and specified compounds are ditetradecyl ether, dicetyl ether, and dioctadecyl ether. From 1 to 1.5 per cent. of ether may be used based on the weight of rubber hydrochloride. Plasticizers such as p 2-ethylhexyl-diphenyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, triethyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, tributoxyethyl phosphate, trimethoxymethylphosphate, trimethoxyethylphosphate, tributoxypropyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, dihydromethyl abietate, diisobutyl adipate, diisooctyl adipate, octyldecyl adipate, dioctadecyl adipate, di (2-ethylhexyl) adipate, dibutyl sebacate and dipropyl sebacate may be added. In addition the solubility of the ethers may be increased by adding compatibilizers such as hydrogenated terphenyls, chlorinated paraffins, or coumarone indene resin.
