Abstract
726,335. Spray-producers. RITTER CO., Inc. Feb. 26, 1953 [April 21, 1952], No. 5439/53. Class 69 (3). [Also in Group VI] A syringe comprises a handle provided with a nozzle and with a pair of fluid passageways leading therethrough to said nozzle, fluid conducting means connected with said passageways and adapted for connection respectively, with a pair of fluid sources, valve means in said .handle for controlling the fluid flow through said passages, respectively, and manually-operable means on said handle for actuating one of said valve means and supplying the fluids concomitantly to said nozzle. The air-liquid syringe shown, Fig. 1, consists of a body 10, head 11 and nozzle 12,- the body comprising a tube 13 fitted in its upper part with a detachably secured cylindrical portion 14 of the head 11 and in its central and lower parts with a tubular casing 15 in which are assembled sectional parts supporting the fluid control valve means. Thus the upper end of casing 15, Fig. 4, has soldered within it the reduced portion 16 of a part 17, the sleeve portion 18 of which slidably guides the stem 19 of the air valve. The part 17 is also formed with air and liquid passageways 20, 21, for receiving air and liquid conducting tubes 24, 25, respectively, the upper ends of the passageways being connected to air and liquid conducting tubes 22, 23, respectively, connected at their upper ends with the passageways in the head 11. The valve stem 19 for controlling the air flow carries a valve body 26 of angular shape in cross-section and slidably guided in a cylindrical bore 27 in a valve seat part 28, the lower face 29 of which forms the valve seat which cooperates with a rubber ring 30 carried in a groove 31 in the valve body. The body 26 is also formed with a groove 34 which engages a spring 35 acting to raise and close the valve. A flexible diaphragm 32 which forms a seal for the valve stem is clamped between the parts 17, 28. Below the part 28 is another valve- 'supporting part 36 formed with a bore 38 for receiving the spring 35 and a bore of reduced diameter for slidably receiving and guiding a nut 39 threadedly engaged with the valve stem 40 of the liquid control valve. Part 36 is also formed with passageways, one of which 41, receives an air tube 42 whilst the other receives the liquid tube 25. The liquid valve body (of angular cross-section) 43 is fixed on the lower end of stem 40 and is slidably guided in a cylindrical bore 44 in a part 45, the lower face of which forms the valve seat for co-operating with a rubber ring 48 carried by the body 43 in a groove 47. The lower end of the body 43 is formed with a second groove 49 for engagement with a spring 50 tending to raise and close the valve and, as for the air valve assembly, a flexible diaphragm 46, clamped between parts 36, 45, forms a seal for the valve stem 40. Part 45 is formed with an air passageway receiving the air tube 42 and with a liquid passageway 61 in which is soldered the lower end of the liquid tube 25. Below the part 45 is a spacer part 52, formed, firstly, with a bore 54 for receiving a spring 50, secondly, with a passageway 55 for receiving the lower end of the tube 42 and, thirdly, with a passageway 57 through which liquid is supplied to the bore 54 and the liquid valve. A screw ring 58 (Fig. 2), provided with passageways 59 and a circular groove 60 for supplying air to the passageway 55 in all positions of the ring, is engaged with the threaded interior of the casing 15 to bear against the part 52 and thereby press together all the parts within the casing. The body 10 is connected to the air and liquid sources through a part 61 threadedly engaged in the lower end of casing 15, the liquid being supplied from flexible inner tube 69 through a central passageway 67 whilst the air is supplied from an outer flexible tube 70 through a passageway 65. The valves are operated by a thumb lever 75 pivotally attached to the tube 13 and formed with a spur 76 which extends freely through an opening in the tube for engagement with an opening in a sleeve 71. This sleeve is adapted to slide (when downwardly-against a spring 77) within the tube 13 and at its lower end receives, and has soldered therein, a washer 72 formed with openings for slidably receiving .the air and liquid tubes 22, 23, and also with a threaded central opening in which is adjustably mounted a screw 73. It is the engagement of this screw with the valve stem 19 which causes operation of the valves. The valves are so arranged that the air valve 26 is first to open and last to close. The syringe head 11-(Fig. 6) is provided with passageways 84, 85, the lower ends of which receive the air and liquid tubes 22, 23, respectively. Passage 85 communicates with a threaded recess 86 in which is inserted a hollow screw 87, formed with a valve chamber 88 containing a ball valve 89 actuated by a compression spring 90, against a ring 92 in the recess serving as a valve seat for the ball. When the nozzle assembly is fitted (Fig. 1), the inner end of a tube 91 forming part of the nozzle assembly presses the ball back against the spring, thereby allowing liquid to flow to the nozzle through the tube 91 upon actuation of the valve means in the body 10. The head also comprises a base member 94 having a bore 95 larger in diameter than the tube 91. so as to leave an air passageway therearound and the upper end of passageway 84 communicates with this annular space. A block 96 carrying a locking spring 97 for releasably holding the nozzle assembly on the head is threaded on the base member 94. This assembly comprises a flared sleeve 99, which is slid on over the member 94 of the head 11 and in which the outer end of the tube 91 is fitted. Support of the tube within the sleeve is effected by forming outwardly flared portions 100 at its end leaving spaces between them for the passage of air outwardly from the sleeve into a tube 102 leading to the nozzle tip 104 and fitted to the outside of the sleeve. Within the tube 102 and soldered within the tube 91 is a tube 103 for conducting the liquid to the nozzle tip. This tip has air and liquid jet openings 108, 106, leading to a spray outlet 110 in a hollow .cap 109.
