Abstract

725,019. Sparking plugs. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 23, 1953 [May 10, 1952], No. 11163/53. Class 7 (4). In a method of treating a low-tension sparking plug in order that it will function at the desired voltage, the discharge path of the insulator 38 is, firstly, provided with an electrically conductive coating 54, such as graphite or carbon black, which is removable by an electric discharge and, secondly, subject to such discharge by the application of a voltage. Construction. The plug is the same as that described in Specification 724,842. Conditioning process. The coating 54 is either brushed or smeared on to the insulator or applied in the form of an emulsion, the liquid being subsequently evaporated. Electric discharges are then applied across the plug as described in the above Specification although when using a graphite coating the initial discharge is at a lower voltage than that at which the plug will normally operate.
