Abstract
724,940. Dipping light-beams of vehicle lamps. BOSCH GES., R. Feb. 18, 1953 [Feb. 20, 1952], No. 4495/53. Class 75 (2) and 75 (4). Means for adjusting the angle of inclination of the light-beam of a vehicle lamp comprises an adjusting member deflectable by temperature changes to adjust the direction of the light-beam and responsive to a heating current, and a switch for controlling said heating current and adapted to be closed when the deformation, of a vehicle spring exceeds a predetermined amount. In the embodiments illustrated a concave reflector 10 in a headlamp 5 is tilted to dip the light beam when the rear of the vehicle is loaded to such an extent that a contact carried by a rear spring (not shown) is moved into engagement with a contact on the vehicle frame to complete an electrical circuit from a battery through a resistance 15 wound about the middle of a bimetallic strip 12. The latter is secured at one end to a ring 20, in which are mounted pivot pins 13 on the reflector 10, and at the other end is attached to a lug 21 on an annular lampholder socket 22 secured to the neck of the reflector, so that on energization of the resistance 15 the strip 12 becomes heated and' 'bends to tilt the reflector 10 by an amount limited by the engagement of the lower edge thereof with a fixed lug 26. An alternative embodiment is described in which the bimetallic element tilts the lampholder instead of the reflector.
