Abstract

724,262. Gear-cutting. FELLOWS GEAR SHAPER CO. Nov. 10, 1952, No. 28240/52. Class 83 (3). A gear-shaping machine comprises a pair of cutter-carriers pivotally mounted on a support 23, the cutters C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> having cutting edges facing in opposite directions, and a reciprocating or oscillating displacer member 39 to move the carriers about their pivotal axes so that the cutters act alternately. The work 18 is reciprocated by hydraulic means 16 and rotated by a former 19 and linkage 20, 21, 22. The cutters are mounted on a slide 23 which reciprocates on a pedestal 24 mounted on a cradle 25 which is adjustable vertically by a screw 26 and angularly by a handle 27. The foregoing details are similar to those of the machine described in Specification 554,115. Twin single-tooth rack cutters C, C<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, are longitudinally adjustable on holders 29, 30 pivoted at 35, 36 to the slide 23 and carrying followers 40, 41 engaging a piston cam 39. The piston is operated to move the cutters to operative position determined by flanges 51, 52 on each side of the holders 29, 30. The cutters are returned by gravity, spring or cam means to a position determined by screws 45, 46. Gibs 49, 50 engaged by the flanges 51, 52 permit a limited transverse adjustment of the cutters. The slide 23 is reciprocated by fluid pressure supplied alternately to cylinders 56, 57, the pressure also serving to actuate the backing-off cam-piston 39. The slide may, however, be actuated mechanically. The single-tooth cutters may be replaced by rack-cutters. The single-tooth cutters may each be mounted on a holder 31a, Figs. 7 and 8, adjustable angularly about a longitudinal axis by screws 72, 73 and longitudinally by screws 34, 76. For cutting helical gears, the cradle 25 is set over and, if rack cutters are used, they are of the form shown in Fig. 10. In another modification, the work 103, Figs. 14 and 15, is carried on a laterally adjustable carriage 101 and is rotated by a motor which also rotates two pinion cutters C<SP>5</SP>, C<SP>6</SP> through worm gearing 125, 126 and replaceable splined connections such as described in Specification 435,702. The cutters are reciprocated by a motor 129 driving through an adjustable crank and connecting rod 133, 134 and segmental levers 135, 136 which are interconnected by an adjustable link 139. The levers 135, 136 and the cutter supports 95, 96 are pivoted to the main frame at 97, 98. The cutters are placed alternatively in operative position by a cam 142 on the shaft 130 carrying the crank 133. The cam engages followers on a lever 143, 144 which is rocked to depress studs 149, 152 engaging studs on the cutter supports 95, 96. The supports are returned by springs 155.
