Abstract

723,653. Automatic liquid level and density control systems. NATIONAL COAL BOARD. Nov. 27, 1952 [Nov. 27, 1951], No. 27753/51. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] Apparatus for determining the level of a fluidized mass in a metal container or its density, by measuring the capacity between the container and an electrode located above the mass, for determining the level, or immersed in the mass, for determining the density, in a bridge circuit wherein the unbalance current is utilized to control the rate of entry of the constituents of the container. For measuring and controlling the level 8 of the fluidized mass 9 in metal container 1 the capacity between the container and an insulated electrode 6 protruding into the container just above the normal level 8 is determined in a bridge circuit 10, the unbalance current energizing a relay 12, whereby a spring-loaded armature 14 causes compressed air to move a piston 19 attached to a slide valve 21 having a bore 22, to vary the rate at which the container is being discharged. The electrode 6 is maintained clean by a jet of inert gas. For controlling the density of the mass 9, the electrode 6 extends vertically through the mass, and the slide valve 21 controls the entry of fluidizing gas at 3. In a further embodiment a plurality of electrodes 6 are assembled at different heights in the mass 9, each indicating via a bridge circuit the density of the mass at that level.
