723,005. Logging boreholes by means of neutrons. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS), Ltd. March 2, 1953 [Nov. 30, 1951], No. 28108/51. Class 40 (3). Apparatus for examining the material surrounding boreholes comprises a source of fast neutrons and a detector of slow or thermal neutrons arranged in leading or trailing relation to each other in a borehole. A significant increase in the number of slow neutrons indicates the presence of carbon in the surrounding rock. As shown, a fast neutron source 2 which may be a capsule containing a mixture of radium and beryllium and of polonium and beryllium is mounted in a tubular shell 1 of material, e.g. aluminium or magnesium which permits the passage of fast neutrons. Above and below the neutron source and inside the shell are arranged plugs of lead 4 which shield the ionization chambers 3, 3, arranged on opposite sides of the source, from direct α-radiation from the neutron source. Other a-rays are prevented from reaching the detectors by lead screens 5 which surround them. Pure carbon packings 6 between the lead and the detectors acts as a conductor for slow neutrons diffusing into the instrument from the coal.
