Abstract

722,985. Wind musical instruments. MIDDLETON, F. A. Dec. 8, 1953 (Dec. 11, 1952; Jan. 26, 1953], Nos. 31408/52 and 2192/53. Class 88 (2) In a mouth organ or a set of " Pan pipes," the reeds or pipes are arranged to give a predetermined melody when blown in succession one after another, starting at one end of the instrument and proceeding from one reed or pipe to its neighbour until the other end is reached. In the case of a mouth organ, two sets of reeds may be provided so that the player produces the melody by blowing while traversing the instrument in one direction and then sucking while moving in the reverse direction. The reed plate and reeds may be produced as a single component by a pressure moulding process from a thermoplastic material, and a set of "Pan pipes," as shown, may be produced in two parts band c by a similar process. The instrument may be provided with a slidable mouthpiece g which clicks into place over each pipe in turn. The bank of pipes may be arranged in either flat or cylindrical formation. In a modification, not shown, the pipes are initially open and all of the same length and are tuned by the insertion of a set of plugs of differing lengths. The pipes may be transparent and marked with parallel lines corresponding to a musical staff in order to facilitate the setting of the plugs.
