Abstract

The invention comprises 2,21-dihydroxydiphenyl methanes of formula <FORM:0722590/IV (b)/1> wherein in each ring "Hal" represents halogen, one X represents hydrogen and the other X represents halogen. The compounds are prepared by condensing 4-halogen-1-hydroxybenzenes, the 2- and 6-positions of which are free and which are further substituted in one of the 3- and 5-positions by a halogen atom, with formaldehyde or agents giving off formaldehyde (e.g. concentrated aqueous formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde). Suitable starting materials are 3,4-dichloro-, 3,4-dibromo-, 3-chloro-4 - bromo - and 3 - bromo - 4 - chloro - 1 - hydroxybenzene, and the condensation of these phenols is carried out, for example, in concentrated sulphuric acid in the presence or absence of organic solvents or diluents such as low molecular weight alcohols (e.g. methanol) or glacial acetic acid. The examples describe the preparation of 4,5,41,51-tetrachloro-, 5,6,51,61-tetrachloro- and 4,5,51,61-tetrachloro-2,21-dihydroxy-diphenyl methane.ALSO:Aqueous or organic solutions or dispersions of 2, 21-dihydroxydiphenyl methane compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0722590/VI/1> wherein in each ring "Hal" represents halogen, one X represents hydrogen and the other X represents halogen, are of use as disinfectants and can be incorporated in cleaning agents, ointment bases, tooth pastes and creams.
