Abstract

721,523. Colour television tubes. CHROMATIC TELEVISION LABORATORIES, Inc. Dec. 23, 1952 [Jan. 8, 1952]. No. 32576/52. Class 39 (1). A luminescent screen for a colour television tube comprises a supporting base, a number of spaced phosphor strips of substantially uniform width deposited on the base and extending across the base in one dimension, the strips being adapted to luminesce in one primary colour, and intermediate strips substantially filling the spaces between the first strips, the intermediate strips being comprised of alternate quadrilateral areas of phosphors luminescent in the other two primary colours. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, the continuous strips G are of green fluorescent material and the other strips are divided into blue fluorescent areas B and red fluorescent areas R. In part of the screen there may be provided a grid comprising four sets of conductors 27, 27<SP>1</SP>, 35, 35<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, the four sets being insulated from each other and serving to focus the beam and to deflect it to the required fluorescent area. The fluorescent material is preferably coated with a metallic layer which forms a lens in combination with the grid wires. Preferably the potential between the grid and the screen is three times that between the cathode and the grid; since the horizontal wires 35 must be spaced from the vertical wires 27 their potentials relative to the screen should not be equal but should be proportional to their distances from'the screen. The electron beam will normally impinge on the points where the phosphors meet; sine waves 90 degrees out of phase applied to the grid wires cause the spot to rotate about these points; since the beam will then cover twice as much of the green phosphor as of the other two phosphors this would produce an unsaturated green colour but by applying a fixed bias between wires 27 and 27' a white colour may be produced. By keying the beam in synchronism with the spinning of the focal spot any colour may be produced. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the continuous strips B are of blue phosphor and the grid wires 65, 67 lie over the boundaries between the phosphors; colour selection is obtained by using a tube with three electron guns, Fig. 4 (not shown).
