Abstract
Olefines are converted to their oxides by passing a gaseous mixture of the olefine and molecular oxygen in contact with catalyst particles consisting of an inert support coated with active silver, the particles being disposed in the reaction zone with increasing activity from the initial contact of the mixture with the catalyst to the discharge of the products from the catalyst. The particles may be arranged in a plurality of zones in the reactor. Catalysts mentioned comprise silver or mixtures of silver and silver oxide supported on fused alumina, magnesia, zirconia, corundum or mullite. Preferably the catalyst is in the form of spheres having roughened or indented surfaces. The spheres are generally about 3/8 th of an inch in diameter. Silver is deposited on the spheres from a slurry of sodium hydroxide and silver nitrate, the product being roasted at 400 DEG C. The catalyst may be promoted with salts or oxides of metals such as Ba, Ca, Sr and Li. Activity changes may be accomplished by changes in the concentration of silver, varying the promoter concentration or by using catalysts prepared by different methods in different sections of the chamber. Diagrams of suitable arrangements of catalysts are provided. In an example ethylene and oxygen at 258-276 DEG C. and 140 p.s.i.g. are passed over a catalyst increasing in activity in zones in the direction of flow and comprising silver on mullite promoted with barium oxide and results obtained in the production of ethylene oxide compared with runs in which the reactants are passed over a fully active catalyst only. Propylene may also be oxidized.ALSO:Catalysts used in the production of olefine oxides by the oxidation of olefines comprise silver or mixtures of silver and silver oxide supported on fired alumina, magnesia, zirconia, corundum or mullite. Preferably the catalyst is in the form of spheres having roughened or indented surfaces. The spheres are generally about 3/8 of an inch in diameter. Silver is deposited on the sphere from a slurry of sodium hydroxide and silver nitrate the product being roasted at 400 DEG C. Promoters such as salts or oxides of metals such as barium, calcium, strontium and lithium may be present. In an Example silver is deposited on mullite from a slurry containing silver nitrate, sodium hydroxide and barium lactate and the product roasted at about 400 DEG C.
