Abstract

A tough plastic composition comprises 95-70 parts of a polyvinyl acetal resin and 5-30 parts of a synthetic rubber, the acetal containing not more than 25 mole per cent of residual acetate and alcohol. Specified acetals are polyvinyl formal and butyral while specified rubbers are polybutadiene, and butadiene copolymers particularly with acrylonitrile, styrene, alkyl acrylates, alkyl methacrylates, diethyl fumarate, vinyl pyridine, vinylidene chloride, alkyl vinyl ketones, and acrylamides. The mixture preferably has an impact strength of at least 4 footpounds and a flexural modulus over 100,000 p.s.i. The composition may be used to make gears, cams, bobbins, shuttles, pickers, containers, pipes, tumbling barrels, terminal blocks, telephones, cable casings, tote boxes, trays, radio cabinets, furniture, phonograph records, panelling, steering wheels, roller skate wheels, protective helmets, printing plates and diecutting blocks.
