Abstract

721,309. Radar; frequency discrimination. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. March 18, 1953 [April 24, 1952], No. 10376/52. Classes 40 (5) and 40 (7). A frequency discriminator comprises a nuclear resonance coupling system. The output from a radar receiver 2 at its intermediate frequency is fed to a coil 3 to produce a high-frequency magnetic field HI in the X direction in a specimen 4 of high' nuclear gyromagnetic ratio. A non-uniform magnetic field HO constant with time threads the specimen in the Z direction. Outputs thus produced in coils 5, 6, having axes in the Y direction are opposed so that echoes from fixed targets are eliminated by prior adjustment of the strength of the field HO, but moving targets produce an output signal at 7 due to Doppler frequency shift. The coils may be side-byside with the field HO non-uniform about the plane P separating them or on a common former on opposite sides of the specimen, with the field HO non-uniform about the axis of the coil 3, Figure (not shown), accompanying the Complete Specification. A nuclear resonance coupling device may be used to provide accurate frequency control by automatic regulation of the input to the coil 3. Water is a suitable substance for specimen 4 because of its hydrogen content.
