Abstract
721,242. Liquid-fuelburners. WILLIAM, R. Oct. 16, 1953 [July 16, 1952], No. 17926/52. Classes 75 (1) and 75 (3). In a rotary fuel oil burner in which an element or spinner is rotated by an air-actuated impeller or impellers located in an air tube or casing,. the arrangement is such that the impeller or impellers, and hence the rotary element, are driven by the natural air draught created by combustion. An inverted conical spinner or cup 38 provided with a re-entrant lip 38b is attached to the end of a freely rotatable shaft 37 mounted in bearings 35, 36 and rotated by air drawn through a bellshaped tube 28 acting on a multi-bladed impeller 44 attached to the shaft 37. The air tube 28 is attached by lugs 28a to a bridge piece 26 slidably mounted on spindles 17 secured at their upper ends to a ring 15. The bridge piece 26 is adjusted in height by a screw 61. The cup 38 is covered by a plate 40 attached to the end of the shaft 37 and is located within a tube 30 centrally supported with respect to a firepot by means of a flange 30a mounted on legs 29 supported on lugs 28b on the tube 28. The flange 30a is covered by a ring 31 provided with a lip 31a and spaced therefrom by projections 30b. The ring 15 is concentrically arranged within a pan 11 by a ring 18 mounted in a recess 15a and engaging the open end of the pan 11 to form an airtight joint. The firepot, comprising an outer cast-iron member 20 having a cylindrical flange 20a on which is located an inner firepot 22 spaced from the member 20 by studs 21, is supported on the ring 15 by legs 19. Height adjustment of the firepot is effected by using legs 19 of different lengths. Fuel oil is supplied to the cup 38 by a pipe 46 and, in the event of the flame being extinguished, the fuel flows over the edge of the lip 38b into the lower part of the burner casing 16 to raise a float 57 which, through a lever 55 and rod 54, moves a trip lever 51 from beneath a weight or spring 50b which drops to close a fuel valve 50. The oil fuel supply to the cup 38 may be controlled by a hand-operated metering valve, by boiler steam pressure operating a piston or diaphragm valve, or by thermostatically controlled means. The burner casing 16 is emptied through a valve 59. Secondary air passes to the combustion zone through apertures 16a in the casing 16 and then around the outside of the tube 28 and firepot member 20. The burner is started by igniting an oil-saturated annular wick 47. Vertical adjustment of the burner assembly relative to the pan 11 is effected by screws 60. Neck rings or baffles 62, 63 are provided to.affect the air flow through the burner and thus the flame shape. In a modification, showo in Fig. 3, an additional tube 64 may be mounted within the tube 28 by means of vanes 65 which straighten the path of the air flowing around the outside of the tube 64. The burner may be arranged for vertical, horizontal or inclined operation.
