Abstract

720,492. Forging-machines. SAXER, A. March 18, 1952 [March 21, 1951], No. 6949/52. Classes 83 (3) and 83 (4). A machine for forging axially symmetrical workpieces comprises hammer tools 13 distributed round the periphery of the work, the tools being adjustable radially of the work by means 15 independent of the work-feeding means, and indicating means 49 to register the axial and radial movements. The forging box is mounted below the floor and has three hammers 13 reciprocated by eccentrics 2 driven by a motor 4. The eccentrics may be adjusted simultaneously by rotating the eccen. tric mountings 15 by a separate motor 19. Overloading of the machine is prevented by a disc coupling 6, the pressure on the discs being continuously varied by a cam 22, lever 23 and disc 26. The work is delivered horizontally to a gripping head 47, the jaws of which are closed by a pneumatic piston 48. The head is then rotated by a motor 37 until the work is vertical and a pneumatically-operated locking pin 43 is engaged. The work is rotated by a separate motor, not shown, and the head 29 is raised and lowered, by a motor 32, on columns 27, 28 protected by telescopic covers. The travel of the head 29 is communicated by a chain 51 and a sprocket 50 to a longitudinally movable pointer 69 in an indicating device 49. Adjustment of the diameter of the hammers is also communicated to the device through a crank 52 and a transversely movable bar 63 on which the pointer 69 is slidably mounted. The pointer thus moves in a manner similar to the shape of the work. By mounting a drawing of the work above or below the pointer the motors 19, 32 can be adjusted continuously to forge the required profile. The dimensions of the work are indicated by a spiral scale on a drum 70 showing the travel of the head, and a rotary drum 71 showing the diameter of the work. A five-position lever 83 controls the reversing and stopping of both motors. If conical shapes are to be produced, one motion may proceed continuously. Triangular or polygonal work is produced by stopping the rotation of the work. More than three hammers may be provided. The movement of the pointer 69 may be associated with an optical projection device. Chucks.-The jaws of the work-gripping head 47, Fig. 1, are operated by a pneumatic piston 48 acting through the linkage shown. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 650,550 and 650,633.
