Abstract

720,405. Doors for aircraft structures. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. March 12, 1953, [March 12, 1952], No. 6391/52. Class 4. A closure for an aperture in an aircraft comprises constantly spaced members arranged to stiffen the aircraft structure on opposite sides of the aperture and forming runways for a roller type door movable in said runways to open and close the aperture, and consisting of channelshaped elements hingedly connected together and driven by notched wheels or cogs which mesh with the door elements. Channel-section runways 1, held apart by spacing strips 2, are located on opposite sides of an aperture A in the aircraft structure. The door consists of channel-shaped elements 3 of pressed sheet or extruded material formed with interlocking ends 8, 9 and mounted on hinge pins 10 which, at their extremities, carry rollers (not shown) to engage in the runways 1. A spindle 12, driven by an hydraulic or electric motor 14, carries cogs 11 which engage the projections 9 whereby, when the motor is energized, the flexible door will cover or expose the aperture A. An emergency manually operated drive 15-18 is provided.
