Abstract
720,018. Treatment of industrial effluents. SOUTH AFRICAN COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. Aug. 21, 1951. [Aug. 25, 1950] No. 19693/51. Class 111. In a process for increasing the efficiency of a conventional anaerobic process for the treatment of an industrial effluent charged with organic matter, sewage sludge is fed along with industrial effluents to a separately maintained anaerobic digester which is used as an inoculation digester for the purpose of periodic reinoculation of the conventional digestion plant in which the industrial effluent is undergoing treatment. A process for treatment of wine distillery effluent is indicated by the flow diagram shown, in which the effluent is fed through conduit 3 to a digester 1 which is charged with digesting sewage solids, supernatant liquor, and asbestos or kieselguhr, and maintained with agitation at mesophilic or thermophilic temperature. The digester may comprise a number of units or compartments with circulation from one to another. The discharge from the digester is through conduit 4 to a sedimentation tank 2 from which the effluent is discharged through conduit 5. Part of the sludge and digester liquor is returned through conduit 7 to the digester 1, excess sludge being run to waste through conduit 6a. An inoculation digester 8 receives daily raw sewage solids through conduit 9 and a small amount of distillery effluent through conduit 10. Inoculum is passed periodically from the digester 8 to the main digester 1 through conduit 12 and previouslydigested liquor is passed from digester 1 to the digester 8 through conduit 11. The inoculum in digester 8 is prepared initially by digestion of raw sewage followed by gradual replacement of part of the sewage by distilling effluent.
