In a steam iron having a reservoir 60 to supply water to a flash boiler 16 in or on an electrically heated sole plate 10, a handle 111, a cover shell 100, and the reservoir 60 are removable as a unit from the sole plate sub-assembly, and the reservoir 60, with a valve 85 for controlling the supply of water to the boiler is removable as a sub-assembly from the cover shell and handle sub-assembly. A cover plate 25 for the boiler 16 has an inlet opening 26 with a countersunk seating 27 designed to receive the part-spherical lower end of a nut 81 screwed onto the lower end of a filling tube 75. A bolt 104 passing through a tube 69 is screwed into a stud 24<1> to hold the sub-assemblies together. The tube 75 and a coaxial tube 70 are provided with slits 79, 80 respectively to allow water poured in through an opening 78 to flow into the reservoir 60. A valve stem 86 passes upwardly through the tube 75 and is pivoted at 87 to a valve actuator 88 which projects through an opening in the upper part of the handle and is pivoted on pins 89 engaged by slots in the actuating member. Detents (not shown) engage in openings 94 in the actuator 88 to hold it in the position shown against the action of a spring 92. The reservoir 60 comprises dished duplicate upper and lower stampings 61, 62 secured together by a joint 63 which may be welded, brazed or of the lock seam type. The reservoir is secured to the cover shell 100 by a tubular bolt 120 received in a tube. 67 welded or brazed to flanges in the top and bottom stampings, the bolt 120 having a threaded end extending through the cover shell and carrying a nut 122. An outwardly flared part-spherical head 121 on the bolt 120 engages an inwardly rolled rib 68 in the tube 67 so as to allow for some misalignment between the reservoir and cover shell. A thermostat 32 has a large diameter control dial 128 which is resiliently held in place by spring fingers 124 engaging in a groove in hub 127 of the dial. An insert 129 in the dial 128 has a groove in its lower end to receive the upper end of a twisted metal strip 131 whose lower end is received in a groove 54 in a thermostat-adjusting shaft 40. The strip 131 may be twisted more or less for purposes of initial adjustment. A baffle 17 at the rear of the flash boiler 16 has a gap at each end of it leading to a deeper superheating chamber 19. From here the steam is passed through passages lying directly over a U-shaped heating element 11 to discharge ports (not shown) in the sole plate 10.
