Abstract

The invention comprises isomeric mixtures of di-iso-decyldimethyl ammonium halides or hydroxides. The isomeric mixtures of the desired products may be prepared from an isomeric mixture of iso-decaldehydes produced by an Oxo reaction between carbon monoxide, hydrogen and a branched chain olefine containing nine carbon atoms, e.g. a propylene trimer or a mixture of propylene trimers of boiling range between 120 DEG and 150 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure. In the example a mixture of iso-decaldehydes obtained by treating a mixture of propylene trimers by the Oxo process is converted to a mixture of iso-decylamines by heating in admixture with ammonia, Raney nickel and methyl alcohol with hydrogen under pressure, heating the product with a further quantity of the iso-decaldehyde mixture, Raney nickel and methyl alcohol and hydrogen at elevated pressure to obtain di-iso-decylamines. A mixture of N-methyl di-iso-decylamines is obtained by heating the latter with formic acid and aqueous formaldehyde, adding sulphuric acid to the product which is then steam-distilled and separating the oil formed after making the residue alkaline. The mixture of N-methyl di-iso-decylamines is converted to mixtures of di-iso-decyldimethyl-ammonium chlorides, bromides or iodides respectively by heating in a Carius tube with methyl bromide and ethyl acetate or methyl chloride and methanol or by allowing a mixture with methyl iodide to stand. The mixtures of halides may be converted to the corresponding hydroxides, e.g. by treatment with an aqueous suspension of silver oxide. The halides or hydroxides may be employed in germicidal and washing compositions (see Groups III and VI).ALSO:Detergent compositions comprise isomeric mixtures of di-iso-decyl-dimethylammonium halides or hydroxides (see Group IV (b)) in admixture with other detergent and or alkaline washing compounds. The isomeric mixtures of di-iso-decyldimethylammonium halides or hydroxides are compatible with water-soluble silicates and phosphates when dissolved in excess sodium carbonate solution.ALSO:Germicidal and detergent compositions comprise isomeric mixtures of di-iso-decyldimethylammonium halides or hydroxides (see Group IV(b) in admixture with other detergent and/or alkaline washing compounds.
