Abstract

A lipstick or other cosmetic composition of essentially oily, fatty or waxy character contains a water soluble dye, particularly an eosin in free acid or salt form, and an acyl alkanolamine of formula <FORM:0719300/VI/1> where R is an alkyl radicle containing 4-17 carbon atoms, and R1 is hydrogen, or alkyl containing not more than four carbon atoms. The A and B carbon atoms may be substituted by one or two alkyl groups, the total number of carbon atoms in such a group, or in both groups together not exceeding two. R may be straight or branched, and may contain rings; hydroxyl or halogen may be present. The R.CO-group is normally derived from natural or synthetic fatty acids, e.g. oleic, stearic, lauric, ricinoleic. Reference is made to mono- and di-ethanolamides and isopropanolamides of teaseed-oil, olive oil, castor oil and cottonseed oil fatty acids. Unsaturated alkanolamides are preferably made from the natural oils rather than from the fatty acids. The alkanolamides should be washed with brine above their melting point and dried at 110-150 DEG C prior to use. From 5 per cent up to 80 per cent of the alkanolamides may be present in the cosmetic composition. The dye should be first dissolved in the amide, and then added to the other ingredients. Examples disclose compositions containing lanoline, cocoa butter, beeswax, ozokerite, carnauba wax, glyceryl mono-oleate, olive oil fatty acid ethanolamide, mineral oil, perfume, insoluble lake, and tetrabromofluorescein or its sodium salt.
