Abstract
718,681. Fishing-reels. STEENSEN, S. J. Nov. 20, 1952, No. 29348/52. Class 48 In a fishing-reel comprising a reel 7 mounted on a shaft 6 fixed to a bracket 5 secured to a rod 1, a friction disc 20 is rotatably mounted on the shaft and is in driving connection with a crank 27 the shaft 25 of which is arranged for limited axial movement to bring the friction disc into engagement with the reel. The friction disc is secured to a gear 22 rotatable on the shaft 6 and engaged with a gear 26 on the inner end of the crank shaft 25. When the crank shaft is pushed inwardly its gear 26 pushes the friction disc into contact with the reel and when the shaft is returned outwardly by a helical spring 30 its gear 26 abuts a flange 23 on the other gear 22 so that it carries this gear 22 and the friction disc with it. In a modification, Fig. 3, the spring 30 and shaft 25 are surrounded by a sleeve 39 which is held in contact with the bracket 5 by a blade spring 40 having a forked end slidable in a groove 41 in the sleeve. The end of the crank 27 is formed to engage with a cam surface formed on the sleeve 39 at an angle to the shaft 25 and when the crank 27 is turned the end rides along the cam surface so that the shaft 25 moves inwardly to engage the friction disc with the reel. At casting the shaft 6 is arranged parallel to the rod as in a stationary type reel but the reel is caused to rotate by initially passing the line around a finger 37 carried by the bracket 5 and disposed between the planes of the end surfaces of the reel. When the reel has reached a sufficient speed the line is freed from the finger so that it then unwinds over the free end of the reel. The latter continues to rotate thus minimizing twisting of the line. The finger may be rigid or made of springy material or it may consist of one end of a spring-loaded lever 37<SP>1</SP> journalled to the bracket, the other end extending to be operated by the fisherman's hand holding the rod. A cup-shaped member 15 is rotatably mounted independently of the reel on the outer end of the shaft 6 and has a flange 16 covering the front flange 8 of the reel. At winding in, the line is guided on to the reel by the fork-end 33 of a pivoted spring-loaded lever 31 rocked by the fisherman. The direction of the winding of the line on the reel may be reversed by placing a loop of the line around one of a series of tooth-like projections 10 formed on the rear flange 9 of the reel and rotating the reel in the reverse direction.
