[Also in Group XVII] In a filling' machine, the pump'for delivering the measured quantities, e.g., heated butter &c., comprises a cylinder 10 attached to the vat 80 and a piston 34 fitted with a soft sealing ring 40. The mouth of the cylinder is flared at 44 and the piston end has grooves 37 and/or passages 38 leading to a bore 36 to permit entry of the liquid into the cylinder at the end of the suction stroke. The same purpose is served by notches 43 in the collar 42 retaining the ring 40. An electric motor drives a shaft 50 carrying discs 49 and crank pins 57 which are connected by rods 48 to a beam 47 which reciprocates the piston through a link 46. To vary the stroke, the crank pins are adjusted by being inserted in the holes in the discs 49 and the rods 48 have an adjustable connection 58, 59 to the beam 47. To obtain a fine adjustment, the beam 47 has an eccentric insert 61 to which the link 46 is connected by a bolt 63; the inserts can be rotated and locked in position by bolts 65. The beam is guided by rods 54 and paddles are attached to the link 46 to stir the contents of the vat 80. The cylinder 10 is closed by a member 16 retained in position by a housing 18 secured to the vat 80 by bolts 32. The member 16 has a seating 25 screwed into it and a cylindrical guide for a valve 24 acting as the delivery valve. The valve 24 has a seat 26 and on its delivery stroke opens further ports 23 leading to the chamber 17 connected to the outlet 29; openings 27 in the valve permit escape of air from within the valve when they align with ports 23. The valve is loaded by a spring 28 and when it closes, it reduces the pressure in the chamber 17 to prevent drip at the outlet. Several pumps may be fitted to the vat and fill rows of containers 68 advanced step by step beneath the outlets 29 by means of rods 70 on endless chains 71 driven by ratchet mechanism from the shaft 50. A vibrator 79 may be fitted to assist the material to settle in the containers and heating means may be provided in the vat.
