Abstract

A composition of a phenol-formaldehyde resin and a high molecular weight linear polymer containing -NH-CO- recurring groups is made by first condensing a phenol with aqueous formaldehyde to produce a product consisting predominantly of a phenol alcohol and/or of di-p-dihydroxydiphenyl methane or a substitution derivative thereof and then dissolving the linear polymer therein and completing the phenol-formaldehyde condensation by heating, volatile substances being distilled off simultaneously. The compositions may be used as varnishes for insulating electrical conductors, for moulding, for spraying or for producing sheets. Specified linear polymers are poly-lactams, poly-omega-amino-fatty acids, polycondensates of diamines with dicarboxylic acids, polyesteramides, polyurethanes, polyhydrazides, polyureas and polymeric derivatives of carbamino-acids. Specified phenols are phenol, the cresols, the xylenols, hydroxydiphenyl, naphthol, salicylic acid, catechol and resorcinol. The phenol-formaldehyde condensation may be effected in acid or alkaline medium, or firstly in alkaline medium and then in acid medium or vice versa and preferably 0.75-2.0 mols of formaldehyde are used per mol of phenol. Solvents may be added at the end of the condensation reaction which bind the formaldehyde, e.g. cresylic acid together with diluents, e.g. benzene or its homologues, tetrahydronaphthalene, aliphatic or aromatic alcohols, or solvent naphtha. A softener, plasticizer, dye or pigment may also be added. In an example, phenol is heated with aqueous formaldehyde containing some hexamethylenetetramine at 60 DEG C. and pH8 to produce a product containing 70-80 per cent. of phenol alcohol. Then poly-caprolactam is added, the mixture heated to 60 DEG C. to dissolve the polyamide, the pH lowered to 3 with lactic acid and the mixture heated in vacuo up to 125 DEG C. A solvent mixture of cresylic acid, solvent naphtha and tetrahydronaphthalene is then added, the mixture cooled and a solvent mixture of cresylic acid and ethyl alcohol added to produce an enamel. Specification 545,941 and U.S.A. Specification 2,378,667 are referred to.
