Abstract
718,383. Engine stop gear. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 4, 1951 [Dec. 5, 1950], No. 28423/51. Class 122(4) [Also in Group XXXVIII] A device responsive to overspeed of an engine comprises a capacitor and a resistor series connected across a source of voltage the frequency of which is proportional to engine speed, a contact making microammeter or other voltage responsive device connected across the resistor responding at a predetermined speed i.e. when the impedance of the capacitor has been reduced sufficiently to increase the voltage drop across the resistor to a predetermined value to stop the engine. As shown, applied to a testing device for internal combustion engines, a push-button 25 is momentarily closed to energize a relay 22 which locks at 23, and, at 24, closes the ignition circuit through the ignition switch 12 and circuit breaker 13 to the ignition coil 15. The voltage thus applied by battery 10 to the ignition coil, pulsates at a frequency proportional to engine speed, and is applied across a capacitor 18 in series with a potentiometer 19. The capacitor impedance is preferably greater than that of the resistor 19 over the speed range in question, so that the voltage drop across the resistor is substantially proportional to speed. At a predetermined maximum permissible speed, a microammeter 21 connected across a portion of the potentiometer 19 closes contacts 21b to short circuit the relay 22 to open the ignition circuit at 24 and thus stop the engine. In another arrangement, Fig. 2, the pulsating voltage is produced by a moving contact 30, pivoted at 31 and oscillated between fixed contacts by a reciprocating part 29 of the engine, whereby the impedance combination 18, 19 is alternately connected across batteries 10a, 10b connected in opposition.
