Abstract

718,330. Capacitors. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 9, 1952, [Sept. 28, 1951.] No. 22653/52. Class 37. In the manufacture of a condenser, two layers of sheet metal separated by insulating layers are wound together, impregnated with an insulating compound, and subjected to pressure to flatten the winding, the pressure being maintained by expansible means until the compound solidifies. Layers of metal foil and paper insulation are wound round a flat mandrel which is then removed when the wound layers are pressed flat as shown in Fig. 3. Electrodes 16 and 17 are inserted into the roll during winding. The condenser units C are placed in a device 2 o and separated by insulating plates 19 so that they may be subjected to pressure by means of spring 22. The condensers, while loosely stacked are dried at about 190‹F. first in an oven and then in an evacuated tank. They are then impregnated with a liquid or viscous insulating compound, which can be solidified. One suitable compound comprises styrene monomer, a casting resin, and a catalyst such as lauroyl peroxide which speeds up the polymerization of the casting resin. After being saturated with the compound the condensers are subjected to pressure while the compound solidifies, and may be baked while under pressure to accelerate polymerization.
