Abstract
Compositions for furnace linings are obtained by mixing granulated refractory material with a cold bonding binder adding 0.5 to 20 per cent. of a flux of a maximum particle size of 0.2 mms. and consisting of aluminium silicates, alkali and alkaline p earth aluminium silicates, or two of such silicates, having a plurality of softening points, heating to 100 DEG to 250 DEG C. whereby, on subsequent heating to high temperatures the flux will cause fusion of the refractory material at widely varying temperatures within a wide range. The preferred refractory is calcined magnesite; specified binders are water glass; alkaline compounds containing colloidal silicic acid or alumina, e.g. slags; or solutions or neutral or acid salts of the alkali metal or alkaline earth groups. The mixes specified are calcined clay; alone or admixed with glass. The calcined clay can be a mixture of grog and brick dust.
