Abstract
717,906. Cleaning coal. NATIONAL COAL BOARD, CHAMBERLAIN, E. A. C., WATERS. P. L., and ROBERTSON, W. S. Feb. 25, 1952 [Nov. 27, 1950], No. 28921/50. Class 82 (2) Coal is recovered from a water-borne suspension which may contain dirt by a method wherein a conditioning agent, a frothing agent and air are introduced into a main flow of the suspension, the main flow containing said agents and air is subjected to a mixing and agitating action, and a part only of the main flow is, then treated for removal of the froth formed thereby, a part of the aerated and agitated main flow variable at will being byepassed, without froth removal, to unite with the main flow prior to the mixing and agitating action. The air and agents may be introduced into the main flow immediately prior to the mixing and agitating action, and that part of the flow of the suspension from which the froth is removed is led into a quiescent zone above and in communication with a turbulent flow zone, the tailings being removed from the lower part of the latter. An apparatus suitable for use in the method comprises a tank a having an inlet and an outlet, a centrifugal pump e having an inflow pipe d and an outflow pipe c<SP>1</SP> delivering to the tank inlet, means j for delivering air and conditioning agents to the pump, and a valvecontrolled by-pass g between the inflow and outfiow pipes.
