Abstract

717,753. Radio-active thickness gauges. ISOTOPE DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd., FEARNSIDE, K., and SHAW, E. N. March 10, 1952 [March 9, 1951], No. 5739/51. Class 40 (3) The thickness of material is measured from one side by detecting the back scattering of a beam of radio-activity directed at an oblique angle to the surface of the material. As shown the radio-active source 19 which may be cobalt 60 is mounted eccentrically in a tube 20 which rests in a hole in a lead block 10. This tube has the effect of collimating the beam. In a larger hole 16 are mounted four Geiger tubes 22 which are thus shie'ded from direct radiation from the source and receive rays scattered from the material One pair of these tubes are at a greater distance from the surface under examination than the other. The four tubes may be replaced by a single detector of the scintillation type. The lead block is supported within a steel casing including a flat bottom plate 11. The Geiger tubes are mounted in brass tubes 23 surrounded by a single larger tube 24 through which cooling water (which may be temperature controlled) is circulated. Variation in the distance of the steel from the gauge is compensated by the fact that as the steel moves towards or away from the gauge the Geiger tubes "see" less or more of the irradiated area. Circuit.-The counter tubes are coupled to a unit 31 which both provides a quenching voltage for the tubes which may be halogen field and produces a constant output pulse for each counter pulse. These pulses are integrated and the direct voltage produced is amplified at 33 and applied to a grid of a pair of cathodes 34, 35 with a commor cathode resistor. The potential of the other grid is determined by a tapping 39 on a potentiometer and between this tapping and a further tapping 42 is mounted a voltmeter 41. By adjusting the set ting of tap 39 the mean cathode current of tube 34, and hence the range of reading of milliameter 38 is determined. Initial adjustments of the voltmeter reading are made with the tap 42 which is then fixed.
