Abstract

717,485. Magnetic structures; dynamoelectric machines. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 23, 1952 [Dec. 29, 1951], No. 32615/52. Classes 35 and 38(2) An electric machine, such as a motor or generator, comprising a coaxial rotor and stator arranged side by side, embodies in one member material of high coercivity in the form of segments 1, 2 of a disc permanently magnetized in the axial direction, and in the other member pole-shoes 3, 4 and 10, 11 of highly permeable material facing but axially displaced from pole surfaces of the magnetized disc. The thickness of the pole-shoes increases towards windings 8, 12 which are borne between them on parts 9 of reduced cross-section. The permanent magnetic material is such that it is not easily demagnetized, e.g. it may consist of non-cubic crystals of polyoxides Fe and at least one of the metals Ba, Sr, Pb and if desired Ca, such as form the subject of Specification 708,127, and all the magnetic material may have high resistivity e.g. greater than 10<SP>5</SP> ohm-cm, so that the machines are suitable for high frequency operation. In a modification, two pole-shoe structures embraced by one winding may be between two permanent magnetic discs whose outer faces bear highly permeable discs to provide a return path for the flux, Fig. 2 (not shown). The permanent magnet disc may be magnetized in all four quadrants, Fig. 3 (not shown), and there may be four segmental pole-shoes associated with four coils, Fig. 4 (not shown). The pole-shoes may be the faces of spirally wound core 31 carrying windings 27-30 on parts of the core of reduced cross-section, the core becoming thinner to the lines 33 equidistant from adjacent coils, Fig. 5. The pole faces of one polarity on the permanently magnetized disc may be of highly permeable material affixed thereto, Fig. 6 (not shown).
