Abstract

A toxicant composition, which forms an emulsion on the addition of water, comprises a toxicant, an organic solvent for the toxicant, and an emulsifying composition comprising (a) a high molecular weight ether, thioether, or carboxylic acid ester of a polyoxyethylene or polyoxypropylene glycol, the high molecular weight radical containing 8-22 carbon atoms and the polyoxyalkylene glycol radical having a molecular weight not less than 200, and (b) an oil-soluble compound of the formula [(Alk)n-Ar-SO3]2M or <FORM:0717279/VI/1> where Alk is an alkyl radical, n is an integer from 1-3, (Alk) n contains from 8-18 carbon atoms, M is an alkaline earth metal, Ar is a benzene or naphthalene radical, and R is methyl, phenyl, hydroxyphenyl, or hydroxyl. Ingredients (a) may be a water-soluble to water-dispersible liquid formed by reacting ethylene oxide with a high molecular weight acid, alcohol, mercaptan, amine, amide, phenol, or naphthol; examples are polyethylene glycol derivatives of sorbitan monolaurate, mono-stearate, and mono-oleate, polyoxyethylene glycol esters of oleic, abietic, soya bean oil, tall oil, and rosin fatty acids, polyoxyethylene glycol ethers of p-tert-octyl phenol, di-isobutyl phenol, p-iso-octyl phenol, iso-dodecyl phenol, dodecyl naphthol, undecyl-p-oxyphenyl ketone, iso-amyl phenol, mono-nonyl phenol, and oleyl alcohol. Examples of ingredients (b) are the calcium, strontium, magnesium, and barium salts of mono- and disulphonic acids derived from mono-lauryl benzene, mono-lauryl naphthalene, dibutyl benzene, mono-lauryl phenol, mono-cetyl phenol, di-octyl benzene, mono-nonyl phenol, mono-myristyl benzene, mono-cetyl naphthol, di-nonyl benzene, iso-dodecyl benzene, mono-stearyl benzene, tri-iso-propyl benzene, mono-stearyl mono-lauryl p benzene, mono-lauryl naphthol, mono-octyl biphenol, and mono-lauryl mono-hydroxy-biphenol. The toxicant is a normally solid or liquid organic solvent-soluble, water-insoluble product which possesses insecticidal, herbicidal, fungicidal, germicidal, rodenticidal, disinfectant, or weed-killing properties. Examples are Toxaphene, D.D.T., chlordane, and benzene hexachloride; others referred to are hexamethyl tetraphosphate, benzyl benzoate, dimethyl phthalate, parathion, tetratheyl pyrophosphate, 2.4-D methoxychlor, alpha-naphthyl thiourea aldrin, dieldrin, and lindane. Organic substances useful as solvents and supplemental agents are benzene, toluene, xylene, kerosene, 2-methyl pentanediol 1, 2, methyl naphthalene, polymethyl naphthalenes, dipropylene and tripropylene glycol methyl ethers, and pine oil. The composition may contain 20-50 per cent toxicant, 30-60 per cent organic solvent, and 5-10 per cent of the mixed emulsifier, the ratio of ingredient (a) to ingredient (b) being from 9:1 to 1:9. On addition to water, an emulsion is formed without agitation, even when the water contains electrolytes.
