A mixture of a granular material and an aqueous suspension of a colloidal clay, in which the viscosity of the gel and the size of the granules are adjusted so that the rate of settling of the granules is not substantially greater than one foot per minute, is forced through a pipe line and the granular material is recovered at the exit of the pipe line. The colloidal clay may take the form of bentomite or fullers earth and the granular material may be potassium chloride crystals suspended in a aqueous solution of the material containing an additional soluble material such as sodium chloride. The pH of the solution may be adjusted to neutral whereby corrosion of the pipe line is avoided.
