716,861. Discharge apparatus. LOEWE OPTA AKT.-GES. Sept. 29, 1950 [Oct. 3, 1949], No. 23881/50. Class 39(1) A method of gettering vacuum tubes consists of using a mixture of a gettering material which acts by vaporizing or " flashing ", e.g. magnesium, with one which absorbs gas when hot, e.g. zirconium. The mixture consists initially of zirconium oxide and magnesium, in specified proportions. The reaction is carried out outside the tube, and results in a mixture of metallic magnesium, zirconium, and their oxides. This is made into a paste in known manner, and attached to electrodes inside the tube.
