716,583. Electrophoretic coating of metal articles. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd. Feb. 10, 1953, [April 23, 1952.] No. 10214/52. Class 41. A suspension of material employed in the electrophoretic coating of metal articles is treated with an ion exchange resin in order to improve its coating qualities. The invention is particularly applicable to suspensions of aluminium oxide, silicon dioxide, berylium oxide and their mixtures employed in coating the heaters of thermionic valves. In an example the suspension comprises 100 parts by weight of alumina in 300 parts by volume of butyl alcohol and 500 parts by volume of methyl alcohol (C.G.S. units). The suspension is shaken for half an hour with one part by weight of ion exchange resin "Zeocarb 225" (R.T.M.) which has been previously treated with hydrochloric acid. The suspension is decanted to separate it from the resin. An effect of the resin is to replace sodium ions present as impurity in the alumina by hydrogen ions. In another.example an alumina suspension for electrophoretic deposition which had deteriorated in use was shaken with "Amberlite I R 120(H)" (R.T.M.) and the resin then removed. The ion-exchange resin may, however, be left in the suspension in certain cases. A treated suspension may be dried and the solid material stored in readiness for re-suspension when required.
