Abstract

715,961. Photographic copying processes; photomechanical printing plates. KODAK, Ltd. Aug. 18, 1952 [Oct. 16, 1951], No. 24069/51. Class 98(2) A latent line or half-tone image is formed in a gelatino-silver halide emulsion layer on a support preferably of paper by contact, reflex, projection or camera exposure and processed to form both hardened and complementary unhardened images by methods (a) developing in a tanning developer, forming a complementary latent image in the emulsion and developing in a non-tanning developer, (b) developing in a non-tanning developer, forming a complementary latent image and developing in a tanning developer, or (c) developing in a tanning developer and treating to reduce residual silver halide in the complementary areas to silver without hardening such areas and thereafter transferring the unhardened gelatin together with the silver contained therein by contact on to a second support at elevated temperature as of 75-110‹F. The transferred image is thus negative in method (b) and positive in methods (a) and (c) to the original subject matter and may be revealed by pulling the two supports apart. Sodium sulphide may be used in method (c) to blacken the residual silver halide. In application of the invention to printing plates, including rollers, the second support is constituted by a printing plate and the transferred image is hardened as with alum or formaldehyde to form a lithographic ink accepter or an etching resist. A single example describes reflex printing of a line document, treatment in a pyro developer, washing, treatment in bright light in a metolquinol developer, washing again, pressing into contact.with plain paper, heating, and peeling off the paper to reveal the positive silver image thereon. Specification 655.274 is referred to.
