Abstract
The invention comprises C4 to C10 saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid polyesters of polyhydric alcohols having the formula <FORM:0715933/IV (b)/1> in which R is -CH2OH or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, the alcohol being completely esterified. In addition to pentaerythritol the alcohol may be, for example, trimethylol ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane or heptane. The monobasic acids used to esterify the alcohols are, for example, n-butyric, isobutyric, n-valeric, isovaleric, 2-ethylbutyric, caproic, n-heptylic, n-octanoic, 2-ethylhexoic, pelargonic, capric and C6 to C10 Oxo acids. The esters are made by standard processes. In an example octanoic acid is esterified with trimethylol propane in the presence of toluene. It is stated that when branched chain acids are esterified some NaHSO4 is used as catalyst. The esters formed are used as lubricants.ALSO:A synthetic lubricant comprises an ester formed from a C4 to C10 saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid poly ester of a polyhydric alcohol having the formula: <FORM:0715933/III/1> in which R is CH2OH or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, the alcohol being completely esterified. Particular esters mentioned are trimethylol propane tri-n-octanoate and pentacrythritol tetracaproate. The esters may be used directly as lubricants or may be blended with other lubricants such as mineral oils or other synthetic lubricants. Viscosity index improves, pour point depressors, oxidation inhibitors, detergents extreme pressure agents, corrosion resisting agents or rust inhibitors may also be added to the esters.
