Abstract

715,347. Radar; radio signalling. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Dec. 31, 1952 [Jan. 4, 1952], No. 390/52. Classes 40 (5) and 40 (7) A range measuring system comprises at a first station (Fig. 1) a modulation signal source 1 and frequency divider 2 intermittently connected by a switch S1a to a transmitter 3 connected to energize the aerial over ganged switch S1b. At a second, station an aerial 10 is coupled over switch S2a to receiver 11 which feeds the received modulation signal FR to phase discriminator 13. A second input to the discriminator is provided by the output of stable oscillator 15 which is fed through frequency divider 16 and switch S2b. The output of the discriminator is used to control reacter 14 which in turn controls the oscillator 15 to bring it into phase with the received signal. The reactor 14 is arranged to have a long time constant and maintains the output of the oscillator 15 constant after the opening of S1a and S1b at station 1. When this occurs the switches S2 at station 2 are also moved and the output of the divider 16 is fed through preset compensating phase shifter 17 to modulate transmitter 12 now coupled to aerial 10. Signals from the second station are received at station 1 and the modulation frequency output of receiver 4 compared with the output of divider 2 in phase meter 5 to give a distance indication The carrier frequency of transmitters 3 and 12 may conveniently be the same and a normal communication transmitter-receiver used for units 11 and 12 at the second station. The oscillator 15 may be replaced by two oscillators whose outputs are mixed to give the required frequency and the reactor control applied to one of them. This arrangement gives a greater range of phase shift control. Two separate modulation frequencies may be used in the system to provide a fine and coarse indication of range. Manual operation of the switches S2 may be carried out when the received modulation ceases or a relay system may be employed changing these switches over for a predetermined period. To select and determine the range to a given one of a number of stations the latter may be made to respond only when one or more of a number of different signalling tone modulations are radiated by the first station.
