Abstract

Elastomeric organopolysiloxane sheet material which is tack-free on one side and tacky on the other is made by partially vulcanizing a compounded organopolysiloxane by heating it at a temperature of 80 DEG to 95 DEG C. for 15 to 35 minutes on a flat surface in an atmosphere of steam, the compounded siloxane consisting of a mixture of (1) an organopolysiloxane having 1.98 to 2 organic radicals per silicon atom, the organic radicals being methyl or phenyl and methyl radicals, at least 50 mol, per cent. of the siloxane units being dimethyl siloxane units, (2) a filler, and (3) from 2 to 5 per cent. by weight of the siloxane of benzoyl peroxide and/or tertiary butyl perbenzoate. The filler is preferably used in amount of 20 to 200 parts by weight per 100 parts of siloxane, and may include silica aerogel, fume silica, titania, zinc oxide, magnesia, calcium carbonate, clay, bentonite, asbestos, diatomaceous earth and ferric oxide. The flat surface may be made of cellulose acetate, polytetrafluorethylene or unplasticized ethyl cellulose, and preferably of aluminium or polyethylene particularly as a coating on paper. Batch and continuous processes are described. Examples are given. The elastomers are used for insulating electrical equipment and for making hoses. Specification 682,541 is referred to.
