Abstract

715,136. Electric indicating systems. ROLLSROYCE, Ltd. Nov. 27, 1952 [Nov. 27, 1951], No. 27847/51. Class 40 (1). In a balancing machine wherein a pair of A.C. generators each produce a voltage of amplitude determined by the oscillations of an associated bearing support for a rotary body to be tested and the unbalance voltage from each generator is combined with a fraction of the unbalance voltage from the corresponding other generator in appropriate phase sense to compensate for errors due to oscillations coupled from the associated bearing .support of such other generator each compensating voltage is derived between the adjustable sliding contacts of a pair of resistance potentiometers connected across the appropriate generator, the sliding contacts being ganged together to move in opposite directions over their respective resistances. A rotary body 11 is mounted in the bearing supports 10a, 10b, of a balancing machine which may be of the kind described in Specification 714,351 and on rotation of the body the supports oscillate in a common plane in the direction of the arrows 10c. The supports are coupled to moving coil electromagnetic generators 12a, 13a and 12b, 13b, whose output voltages representing the oscillations of the associated supports energise pairs of parallel potentiometer resistances 14a, 14b having sliders 15a, 15b, mechanically coupled so that as one slider moves towards one junction of a pair the other slider moves towards the opposite junction. A single control multicontact two-position switch is arranged to inter-connect the output of either generator in series with the amplitude and phase sense adjustable output of the opposite compensating potentiometer to energise a coil 25a of a wattmeter whose other coil 25b is energised from an alternator 26 driven at the same speed as the rotary body, and which indicates the compensated magnitude of the un-. balance in the selected generator plane. The generator and compensating voltages may be amplified.
