Abstract

A non-toxic veterinary preparation for oral administration in the prophylaxis of scours, comprises as essential ingredients immune proteins derived from mammalian blood and a vitamin K compound. The immune proteins or antibodies are obtained from mammalian blood, preferably the non- citrated pooled blood of dairy cattle, sheep, pigs, and other animals, such as is available at an abattoir. The immune proteins are preferably obtained from the blood of the same species as is being treated. Suitable forms are dried plasma, dried serum and Howes Na2 SO4 globulin fraction. The vitamin K may be natural, e.g. K1 or K2, or synthetic, e.g. 2-methyl-1, 4-napthoquinone (menadione); 2 - methyl - 1, 4 - naphthohydroquinone 3-sodium sulphonate; 4-amino-2-methyl-1-naphtholhydrochloride; 2 - methyl - 3 - hydroxy-1, 4-naphthoquinone; 2-methyl-1, 4 naphthohydroquinone-diphosphoric acid ester tetrasodium salt; 2-methyl-1, 4-naphthohydroquinone; 2 - methyl - 1, 4-naphthohydroquinone diacetate; and 2-methyl-1, 4-dihydroxy-3-naphtholaldehyde. Bile salts are incorporated with the water-insoluble vitamins, e.g. K1 or K2, to facilitate absorption. Examples consist of dry mixtures of (a) dried bovine plasma and menadione; (b) dried bovine plasma, menadione and Ringer Tyrode salts (NaCl, KCl, Na HCO3, NaHPO4, MgCl2 and glucose); and (c) dried bovine plasma, menadione, Ringer Tyrode salts and partially digested milk solids. Plasma-milk solid preparations contain 60-90 parts of milk solids to 10-40 parts of plasma. The preparations are dissolved in water for use. Colostrum (first milk after birth of progeny) may replace the milk solids, or salt mixture, or both.
