Abstract

Substances with one olefinic bond are polymerized or copolymerized in a system having a continuous phase which comprises an aqueous solution of an emulsifier and a discontinouus phase which comprises the olefinically unsaturated substance or substances, the concentrations in the aqueous phase of polymer and monomer at the end of polymerization being respectively less than 10 per cent. by weight and less than 7 per cent. by weight. The monomer may be emulsified in the aqueous phase or there may be p utilized a process in which an upper layer of monomer rests on the aqueous phase in which by stirring, drops of monomer are flung from the upper layer into the aqueous phase. The process of Specification 687,984 may also be used. Polymerization may be carried out in a batch or continuous process. Monomers specified are vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, styrene, methyl acrylate and methacrylate, vinylidene chloride and methacrylonitrile. In Examples, sodium mersolate is used as emulsifier, the catalyst employed is potassium persulphate or ammonium persulphate, the latter being used in conjunction with sodium sulphite, and sodium bicarbonate is also present in the aqueous phase. Specifications 643,169, 707,115, 707,116, and 707,117 also are referred to.
