Abstract

Colloidal solutions of oxides of metals or metalloids are produced by decomposing a suitable volatile compound in the gaseous state by means of a gaseous oxidizing or hydrolysing agent, recovering the oxide in pure form and dispersing said oxide in a liquid medium by mechanical means such as intensive stirring or wet grinding. In a preferred embodiment steam is formed in situ by burning hydrogen or a hydrogen containing gas with which is mixed the volatile compound, if desired with diluent gas such as nitrogen. The oxide particles may be cooled before recovery by electrostatic precipitation, settling, filtering or deposition on cooled surfaces. In examples silica and titanium dioxide aquasols are formed from the tetrachlorides. 10-25 per cent, silica aquasols of great permanence can be produced in this way. Alumina and zirconium dioxide sols are also referred to. Additional substances such as protective colloids or electrolytes may, if desired, be added.
