Abstract

712,799. Winding and reeling. BOCHER, H. July 15, 1952, No. 17888/52. Class 83 (4) A wire winding block which can operate at will on the Garret or the Edenborn system, comprises a winding. drum 8 rotatable from a hollow shaft 4 through a clutch coupling, against the lower open end of which drum Garret or Edenborn carrying arms 14 or 26 respectively are applied at will, the block also comprising Garret and Edenborn entry tubes 48, 15 respectively, the former insertable at will, the latter leading into the removable, Edenborn guide tube 17, leading to the upper rim of the winding drum and a positive coupling 13 between the gear for swing- ing the Garret arms and the gear for clutching the drum to the hollow shaft. A member 10 is longitudinally slidable in the shaft 4 under the control of worm gearing 42 and link 44, Fig. 3, to actuate the Garret arms 14. In the working position-of the arms, shown left of Fig. 1, the drum is clutched to the shaft, which is driven by a motor 7. The Edenborn carrying arms 26 are operated by spring-loaded racks :27, vertically movable by a cam surface 36 on a toothed ring 37 which may be rotated by a motor 40. An outer drum 19 serves as a protection and has a seat 21 which, when the arms 14 are withdrawn, engages a braking surface 22 in an outer ring 23. A chamber 3 contains cooling water, which may be discharged through a closable pipe 3a on to the wire bundle. When the apparatus is to operate as a Garret block, the guide tube 48 is placed in position, arms 26 are swung aside by the motor 40, the Edenborn guide tube 17 removed and the member 10 brought into its lowest position, thus swinging the arms 14 up beneath the drum, which at the same time is coupled to the shaft 4 and rotated. By actuation of the gear 43 and parts 10, 11 and 13-16 the carrying arm 14 may then be swung out again and a finished coil discharged onto a cooling bed 49. For use as an Edenborn block, the tube 48 is removed and the member 10 drawn upwards so that arms 14 are swung into the interior of the drum. In this position the Edenborn guide tube 17 can be set in the member 10 and secures it in position. The arms 26 are swung up to the end of the block by means of the motor 40 and the drum uncoupled from the shaft 4 so that it remains stationary. The arms 26 may be swung downwardly to discharge a finished coil on to the cooling bed.
